Steven Knight, A Peaky Blinder Creators Film Studio In Birmingham Will Generate 760 Jobs
The construction of Digbeth Loc Studios, founded by Peaky Blinder creator Steven Knight, has begun. Significant new television and film studios in Birmingham are anticipated to generate more than 700 jobs.
The location for a new Peaky Blinders film has been determined, and it is anticipated that this will boost the local production sector.
Knight stated,
“It will alter the character of opportunity for people in this city.”
The scriptwriter announced during the opening of the Fazeley Street location that filming for the Peaky Blinders movie would soon begin there, and a call for extras would be issued immediately.
“A haircut and a cap are all you need,” he added.
Knight stated that a drama about Birmingham university students is also in production at the studio, which has been confirmed as the new home of BBC’s MasterChef and a partner of Two Tone’s This Town.
“I wish I could reveal what’s on the horizon, as there are several mind-blowing enterprises in the works,” he continued.
The development of existing warehouses and new “state-of-the-art” studio spaces is anticipated to be completed by the 15th of July, with the first filming scheduled for the month of October.
Knight stated that the plant will generate 760 employees, including those who can “walk to work.”
“There have always been opportunities for location filming in this city, but large studio space has been absent. It makes perfect commercial sense to avoid transporting individuals from London and Manchester and housing them overnight “he continued.
It will also offer music production capabilities, with iconic Birmingham band UB40 occupying studio space.
Robin Campbell, the founding member of the band, called it Birmingham’s “most exciting development in decades.”
“It will bring talent, businesses, and projects from around the globe to the city’s pounding heart to collaborate with Birmingham’s finest,” he continued.
The project, a joint venture between Knight and Piers Read of Time & Space Ltd Ltd, has garnered £1.3 million in city deal fund public funding.
The funds are the outcome of an agreement between Birmingham City Council and Homes England to acquire commercial land for the creative industry.
Other backers and partners, including a film school, intend to provide training for kids from nearby communities.
Andy Street, mayor of the West Midlands, stated at the launch that it was a “landmark event” for the city and area, with a projected economic impact of over £30 million.
“This is about new jobs and opportunity in a sector where Birmingham and the West Midlands may not have been as strong as they may have been,” he continued.
