Mexican Rapper Lefty SM Shot & Killed Aged 31

Mexican rapper Lefty SM, who had been building quite a following in his native country, has been shot and killed, his record label has confirmed.

Billboard Español was the first to reveal the news that the rapper (real name Juan Carlos Sauceda), a native of San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, was murdered on Sunday (September 3).

“Dear Alzada friends and family, with profound sadness we’re informing you about the death of our brother, Lefty SM, Juan Carlos Sauceda,” Lefty SM’s record label Alzada confirmed, in Spanish, on its Instagram page. “Our love and prayers are with his wife María Isabel and their two daughters.”

Lefty SM was reportedly attacked near his home in Guadalajara, Mexico. The motive for the crime has not yet been made clear, but an official report from the Mexican government is scheduled to be forthcoming on Monday (September 4).

A PR representative for the label wouldn’t comment on any possible motive.

Lefty SM’s murder caused an outpouring of grief within the Latino Hip Hop community, with many prominent rappers from the scene expressing their shock and disbelief of his murder.

“This isn’t possible, brother,” wrote the Santa Fe Klan, in Spanish, in an Instagram post made on Sunday (September 3). “Tell me it’s a lie.”

MC Davo, who performed with Lefty SM at a sold-out show on Friday (September 1), just two days before he was killed, also expressed his grief in a now-deleted Instagram story. “How is this possible? I can’t believe it, really, I can’t believe it man,” he said, according to Billboard Español.

Despite not making a mainstream name for himself in English-language Hip Hop, Lefty SM was well-known in Latino Hip Hop. He got his start in 1992, but ultimately took off in 2017 when his YouTube channel went viral.

Many of Lefty SM’s best-known hits were collaborations with the Santa Fe Klan, including “Si me caigo”, “Con los ojos rojos” and “Por mi México.”
