Jose Mourinho's third-season curse continues with unwanted record as Roma fans demand players 'show

Roma fans have turned on the club's players as Jose Mourinho suffered his worst start to a league campaign.

The Portuguese manager has a track record of results going downhill in his third season at football clubs.

Now, Roma look to be the latest victims of that curse.

The Serie A side suffered a 4-1 defeat to Genoa on Thursday, taking this season's number of league defeats up to three, with two draws and just one win to their name after six games.

As a result, Mourinho has achieved a new record low points return after winning five points in six matches, beating his previous low of seven in six with Chelsea in the 2015/16 campaign - his third season in charge in his second spell.

It was the same story during his first stint at the club, too, when he departed after three seasons in 2007 after finishing six points off Premier League champions Manchester United following their two consecutive league title wins.

Mourinho also left Real Madrid at the end of his third season after Los BLancos finished 15 points behind Barcelona in LaLiga to end the term trophyless.

He was also sacked midway through his third season at Manchester United in December 2018 after just seven wins in 18 top-flight matches.

Now, Mourinho is experiencing some serious deja vu.

The 2022 Europa Conference League winners got a grilling from their travelling fans in the game as they extended their winless run to three games.

'We want respect', 'we've had enough' and 'show us some b***s' were the chants aimed at the players.

After the game, Mourinho only took questions from the pitch side reporter, telling DAZN: "I apologise to the studio, but I have no real desire to talk. I didn't speak to the players.

"When I don't talk to the players, then it means I can't really discuss this in-depth and answer your questions either."

"To say we lost the solidity because we are missing this or that player is not fair either," he added. "Solidity is also the consequence of team spirit and collective work to track back. We have lost some of that."

The ex-Chelsea boss is aware the loss doesn't reflect well on him, either.

However, in typical Mourinho style, he went on to remind those watching of his more flattering track records.

"It is the worst [start to a campaign] of my career too," he remarked. "However, I also think it is the first time that Roma have played two European Finals in a row."

Addressing how his side can turn their fortunes around, he stated: "It is the squad we have and with this squad we must emerge from this situation.

"There is no more transfer window, nobody can leave or arrive, this is the group we have with its qualities and its problems.

"We have no time to cry. We can cry internally, because it hurts our heart, especially for me because of my rapport with the Roma fans.

"But tomorrow we will be back at work. The next game is worth three points, not seven or eight, but it becomes a very, very important match for us."
