Robert Herjavec was born September 14, 1962 in Varaždin, SFR, Yugoslavia which is known as Croatia in today’s world. As a child, he spent his early days in Zbjeg. When he was eight years, his family had to move to Halifax, Nova Scotia, a municipality in Canada after his father was incarcerated having been sentenced to jail a total number of 22 times prior for being an anticommunist who vehemently spoke against the then regime.

Upon their arrival in Halifax, they brought only a suitcase and an amount of US$20. Later, he relocated to a family friend’s home in Toronto, living in their basement for 18 months. Herjavec attended New College at the University of Toronto and graduated with a degree in English Literature and Political Science in 1984. While in school, he worked minimum wage jobs as debt collection, retail sales, waiting tables and delivering newspapers to help support the family.

During the mid-1980s, worked as a third assistant director in several productions which included Cain and Abel and The Return of Billy Jack. He was a field producer for Global TV of the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.

Herjavec took six months no pay job to work as Logiquest where he sold IBM mainframe emulation boards, because he was not qualified for the job at the time. He rose through the ranks to becoming General Manager. Although he achieved the feat of GM, he was fired from Logiquest in 1990 and that became the turnaround in his career.

He founded BRAK Systems, a Canadian integrator of Internet security software, from the basement of his home which he later sold to AT&T Canada (now Allstream Inc.) in March 2000 for $30.2 million. He then became Vice President of Sales at Ramp Network, which was sold to Nokia for $225 million.

Herjavec has been in two separate marriages. In 1990, he married an optometrist, Dr. Diane Plese. The couple separated in July 2014 and finally got a divorce in early 2016. After the marriage fell apart, Herjavec contemplated divorce. His marriage with Diane bore three children; two daughters Caprice and Skye and a son Brendan.

In 2015, during which time he was separated from Diane, Herjavec started dating former ‘Dancing with the Stars’ partner Kym Johnson. The two got engaged and married in 2016. The new couples announced they were having twins, a boy and girl on April 23, 2018. The boy was named Hudson Robert Herjavec and the girl Haven Mae Herjavec.
